Born in a small town in Michigan in 1962, Suanne Martin's evolution as a sculptor began at Kalamazoo College in the early 1980's, after having won an art scholarship to attend. Attracted to the school's reputation for academic excellence as well as its foreign study program, Suanne was able to travel and study extensively throughout eastern and western Europe, as well as the Middle East. Despite the breadth of her undergraduate academic education, Suanne felt a strong foundation in the fundamentals of the discipline of sculpture woefully inadequate. Luckily, she found a mentor in master sculptor Jay Holland, an instructor at The Center for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan. Suanne studied under Jay for three years, learning the foundation of figurative sculpture and anatomy. Moving to New York in 1989, Suanne continued her art training at Pratt Institute, earning a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1991. As a graduate student, Suanne earned money as a toy sculptor and model-maker, freelancing for such companies as Marvel Comics, Happiness Express and others. Since 1991, Suanne has made a living exclusively as a sculptor, working for various studios in New York, New Jersey and Chicago. She has been commissioned to create pieces as small as two inches to large monumental fountains as large as 20 feet. Mostly, her work has been focused on sculpting the human form, with a special emphasis on the human head and portrait work. In addition to her figurative work, Suanne is also building a strong and growing clientele for her canine sculpture - highly detailed and cast in sterling silver, bronze or marble.
